My introduction to chiropractic started in my high school years. I was a multi-sport athlete but my true love was basketball. I dealt with chronic low back pain that I was able to manage with stretching and resting. Being young and naïve I did not give it much thought, assuming everybody had some kind of minor back pain. I was referred to a chiropractor by my family doctor for a severe foot injury. I had no idea what a chiropractor was. On one of the visits while treating my foot he also adjusted my low back. I walked out of his office thinking to myself this is how my back is supposed to feel. All those years not realizing that I did not have to deal with low back pain. From then on, I knew where to go when my low back acted up.
I realized getting adjusted helped my body move and work better. I attended Western States Chiropractic College and I graduated in 1989. In 1990, I opened up my first office in the popular Olympic Athletic Club on Arbutus in Vancouver. The club gave me an opportunity to work on all patients, from professional athletes to weekend warriors. In 2000, I opened Burnaby Metrotown Chiropractic, since then Burnaby Metrotown Chiropractic has expanded into a multidisciplinary health center that has included massage therapy and acupuncture.
I have always had a passion to train and improve my athletic performance. As I have gotten older, I have realized that it’s no longer about how strong, how fast, or how big I can get. It’s more about just being functional and pain-free. At age 45, I became a father and realized I had to keep myself physically fit if I wanted to participate in my son’s activities. Luckily, I found yoga. Most sports cause pressure, compression, tension and stress on the musculoskeletal system. Yoga is one of the few activates that promotes space, expansion and relaxation.
I was lucky to have found yoga, not only because it has been a fountain of youth for me but also because it ties in so well with the chiropractic lifestyle of a healthy spine equating to a healthy life. I incorporate exercises such as yoga, muscle strengthening and stretching in my chiropractic practice. I have been able to help many patients with this combination of treatment regimes. As a regular practitioner of yoga; I understand the limitations of health care providers and the benefits of a lifestyle of regular, suitable exercises. As I tell my patients, “When joints move better, you feel better.”
